Collecting, protecting, promoting Baptist history

Not an even a broken foot could keep Frances Hamilton from sharing with messengers to the Alabama Baptist State Convention about the importance of the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission (ABHC).

Hamilton, who said she broke her foot while in England, gave her report during the annual meeting of the Alabama Baptist State Convention, Nov. 14–15 in Montgomery.

“At the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission, we are ministers with you in collecting, protecting and promoting our Baptist heritage,” she said.

Microfilming records is an effective method of historical preservation. The report said Cooperative Program funding helps the ABHC offer the service free to Alabama churches.

The ABHC is also working to maintain a history of church life and leaders through interviews for its oral history collection. The report said video-recorded interviews now supplement audio recordings.

Another area the report said the ABHC is involved in is recounting the experiences of Alabama Baptists and “their Great Commission ministries” through its publication ministry.

The commission is also concerned with marking special events with churches, according to the report. (TAB)
