Commission aids higher education

Representing the education commission at this year’s Alabama Baptist State Convention is Birmingham was member James Newell, pastor of First Baptist Church, Jasper.

Newell said he was glad to report that despite the challenges in the stock market, the Alabama Baptist institutions of higher Christian education were in excellent financial shape.

He pointed out that while Samford University, Judson College and the University of Mobile each have their own uniqueness, they all have their own uniqueness, they all have three things in common – they all need money, they all are committed to academic excellence and the student life on all the college campuses is in good shape.

“Our students who come to our Baptist schools are glad to be there,” Newell said.

“They are learning and experiencing life in a Christian environment and we can be thankful for the quality of student life that these students have.”

Praising the Christian emphasis of the institutions he said, “These schools offer education in the context of what it means to be a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ. That’s what distinguishes our institutions from all the other places people can go to receive degrees.”
