Conference on Alzheimer’s, dementias set

Birmingham Baptist Association (BBA) and United for Life Foundation in Birmingham are sponsoring Embracing Alzheimer’s & Other Dementias, a resource conference for families, caregivers, clergy and professionals, at Shades Mountain Baptist Church, Vestavia Hills, Feb. 4–5.

Keynote speaker Ellen Marie Edmonds (see story, this page) hopes the conference will reach families and churches that are ministering to Alzheimer’s patients.

“The conference will offer a lot of practical tools from the faith-based nature of the journey as well as from health, wellness, nutrition, organizational, relational and neurological issues,” she said.

Mike McLemore, executive director of BBA, believes this is the first time a conference on this issue has been offered to in the Birmingham area.

“[BBA]’s purpose is to help and provide resources to our churches, and to me, this is a wonderful way we can provide support and resource material to our churches and senior adult ministries that are facing [this issue],” he said.

The conference will host many exhibitors related to the care of a loved one with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

There also will be other speakers, including Debbie Moss, minister of health and wellness at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church, Birmingham. For the past two years, the church has had a worship service called Connection for people with mild to moderate dementia.
