Members of the Alabama Baptist Conservatives Network (ABCN) gathered Nov. 17 at First Baptist Church, North Mobile, in Saraland for a brief discussion following the final session of the 2003 Pastors Conference.
The purpose of the 15-minute meeting was to boost attendance by conservatives during the Nov. 19 session of the Alabama Baptist State Convention, when officers would be elected.
Network coordinator John Killian told approximately 25 people at the meeting he knew of no organized opposition to second terms for three convention officers supported by the ABCN at the November 2002 convention in Birmingham.
Killian noted that the convention officers are generally elected by messengers to a second one-year term. However, he cautioned that a Mainstream Baptist meeting on Nov. 18 might develop opposition to re-electing the three.
Killian said the Mainstream groups featured speaker, Tony Campolo, could draw a large enough audience to bring a challenge to incumbents in the offices of president, first vice president and second vice president. Second Vice President Roger Willmore, the only officer attending the ABCN meeting, noted it is good for messengers to stay the entire program.
Killian, pastor of Maytown Baptist Church, urged his hearers to remain at the convention until after the election of officers. He said the next ABCN meeting will probably be held during the spring of 2004.
