Preaching and teaching as much as singing, Christian vocalist Steve Amerson inspired those attending the Tuesday evening celebration service at the recent Alabama Baptist Convention.
Amerson, who writes most of his own music, weaved a Broadway hit from Les Miserables into his performace.
“When God forgives, He forgets,” said Amerson, who offers a concert using only Broadway songs that have a spiritual message. “To understand God’s grace, I’m singing concerts in churches using Broadway songs.”
With a purposeful message revolving around the Christian lifestyle, Amerson challenged the congregation with each song.
“Go teach your people to be graceful,” he said. “It has to start in the pulpit. It will work its way down.”
Belting out “It’s Still the Cross” at the conclusion of the concert, Amerson reminded Alabama Baptists that “each of us must decide what we will do with the cross.”
Other music at the state convention was provided by the Alabama Singing Men under the direction of Tom Smith; “Souled Out” from Lakeside Baptist Church, Birmingham; the choir from Hillwood Baptist Church, Huntsville; the Madison Baptist Association Choir and Orchestra and Celebration Brass.
