Cordova church marks 100 years

Corinth Baptist Church, Cordova, has changed a lot in the last century, and on Sept. 4, members recalled the past decades as they celebrated the church’s 100th anniversary.

Many in attendance were decked out in period clothing, strolling about in overalls or long dresses with aprons and bonnets. J.B. Thomson, a former pastor who served the church for about 17 years, preached during the morning service.

Corinth Baptist was organized on Sept. 5, 1905, with 18 charter members, Marlene Abel, secretary for Corinth, explained that the church, which was a branch of Samaria Baptist Church, Jasper, was established because of the difficulties of trying to maneuver horse-drawn buggies over rugged roads.

The original church building was a wooden, one-room structure with a potbellied stove. Forty-six years later, a new building was constructed on the same property.

Now, the 225 members, Corinth’s congregation looks to a project it has in the works – a family life center.
