Cottage Hill Baptist Church in Mobile celebrated its 75th anniversary by giving a special gift to a local family — a 1,970-square-foot home. It was part of the church’s “Love Where You Live” (LWYL) initiative that gives members opportunities to serve as the hands and feet of Jesus in the greater Mobile area.
“For our 75th Anniversary, I wanted to challenge our church to complete the largest LWYL project to date: to purchase a lot in a neighborhood and build a house for a single parent with at least one special needs child,” said Alan Floyd, Cottage Hill’s pastor church since 2012. “After consulting with area social workers, pediatricians and our own leaders in our Special Needs LIFEgroup, we identified a family.
“Items not donated by businesses for this home were purchased by church members and church volunteers worked in all capacities to complete the house,” he said. So far 312 church members have volunteered close to 2,000 hours of their time to work on the Love Where You Live house.
The home was officially presented to the family on Oct. 6 as part of the church’s 3-day anniversary celebration. Activities included homecoming at Cottage Hill Christian Academy, a fun-filled family festival, a concert featuring past and present church singing groups, interviews with former pastors and a congregation-wide lunch.
Jason Allen, president of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri, who was raised and came to faith in Christ at Cottage Hill, spoke at the church’s Sunday worship service. Allen challenged the congregation to honor the past but focus on the future.
Cottage Hill has grown tremendously since its first tent meeting in 1945 with 28 members in attendance. It now consists of three church campuses — two in Mobile and one on Dauphin Island — as well as a K-12 school and a fitness center. The church has transformed over the years but Cottage Hill’s foundation of loving God and loving His people has stayed the same, said Parker Douglas, the church’s director of communications.
