Dads, daughters bond at camp

Rich Hobson’s Bible is covered with notes and has many verses highlighted that remind him of special weekends he has spent with both of his daughters at WorldSong Missions Place, Cook Springs.

The Hobsons have attended GA and Dad Missions Overnight Camp six times between the three of them- Rich, the dad, and his two daughters, 11-year-old Amelia and 14-year-old Whitney.

“It was the total package of all [the activities] and because of getting to spend quality time with both of my daughters and getting closer to God that made that weekend so special for me,” Rich said.

GA and Dad Missions Overnight Camp, also known as Dad and Daughter Camp, is offered every summer at Alabama WMU’s WorldSong Missions Place in Cook Springs.

This summer, the camp will be held June 20-21.

At the overnight camp, girls who have completed kindergarten through second grade are invited to experience aspects of camp while spending time with their dads.

“We went swimming and did archery and we made crafts,” said Whitney.

“And we got to talk to a lot of missionaries.”

Her sister Amelia added, “I think my favorite part was climbing the mountain and doing the devotional at the top.

“It was just a special time with my dad,” she said.

Rich said if fathers could realize how fast time passes, they would definitely see the benefits of spending time with their daughters. “This is a time when dads can shut out the world with all of its stresses and problems and focus on one of God’s best creations, a daughter,” he said with tears in his eyes.

Rich’s wife, Suzie agreed. “Being at WorldSong nurtured [the girls’] roles with their father and it reinforced the Christian leader in our home,” she explained.

“I think that if everyone knew how cool dads can be and how much fun they can be, a lot more people would come to Dad and Daughter Camp,” Whitney Hobson said. “Dads don’t have to be some overbearing figure. They can be a lot of fun.”
