Life is a Church
Word Records
There’s something immediately accessible in “Life is a Church,” the latest album by David Phelps.
Until leaving the Gaither Vocal Band in 2005, Phelps was the youngest member of the group. Now shining in his solo career, there’s an indescribable quality to the sound and vision of this album that Christian and secular audiences would likely both quickly pick up on.
Phelps has created a generously genuine pop-rock document of his life and faith that just feels right. Lush instrumentation flows throughout the record, yet all 11 songs somehow avoid all the usual pitfalls of overproduction. Part Michael English, part Keith Green, part David Gray, part Michael W. Smith, Phelps, in addition to having a refreshingly powerful voice, brings an organic charm to contemporary Christian music.
And his is a charm coming to Southside Baptist Church, Ozark, March 17, as well as Mobile’s Saenger Theatre March 18 and Birmingham’s Alabama Theatre March 25–30, where he will be shooting footage for his upcoming tour DVD.
