Right on, editor! “Could this work for deacons?” (Dec. 5, 2002) was authentic and practical. A training session for members of nonprofit boards of directors strongly suggests an ongoing need for deacon training.
The focus must be on servant leadership, under God, that is accountable to the church and the leader of the flock. Current concepts of what deacons should be and do are well addressed in The Deacon magazine and in publications by Drs. Jim Henry and Henry Webb.
Biblically-based guidance for deacons, supplemented by that of authentic theologians, affirmatively answers your question. The basic concept of a secular board, however, is not compatible with that of deacon servanthood.
