A prophecy conference featuring speaker John Phillips was held April 17–20 at Deerfoot Baptist Church in Trussville.
“This is the kind of thing the community can expect from Deerfoot,” said Pastor Roger Willmore. “We’re a Bible-based church and we want to teach the Bible.”
Phillips — widely known for his “Exploring” commentary series that studies books of the Bible both individually and in sets — is the author of more than 40 books.
Phillips uses point-by-point alliteration to give readers simplified but biblically-sound outlines of Bible subjects. He did the same at the conference at Deerfoot, covering such topics as references to the return of Jesus in Psalm 24, the parable of the fig tree (Matt. 24:32–36) as it relates to the rebirth of Israel and changes that will occur in the resurrected body according to 1 Corinthians 15.
One of the highlights of the conference was Phillips’ single-sermon walk through the entire Book of Revelation in 45 minutes.
A native of Great Britain, Phillips spent two years in Palestine with the British army during the last years of the British mandate. In 1948, he witnessed events that sparked a lifelong passion.
“I saw with my own eyes many events that led to the free state of Israel,” he said. “That was when I formed an interest in prophecy.”
Following his army stint, Phillips moved to British Columbia, Canada, and became a bivocational pastor. In 1958, he became business manager of Moody Bible Institute and had a radio program, “Radio School of the Bible.”
Now retired and living in Kentucky, Phillips is a widely sought-after speaker for conferences around the world.
“He’s leaving a legacy to the church,” Willmore commented. “If John Phillips were an artist, he would be numbered among the masters.”
