Disaster relief braces for storms

As severe weather rolled across the South in late March, Alabama Baptist disaster relief volunteers were on standby should the call come for help.

At press time, Baptists in Mississippi were responding to victims of a tornado that hit Magee, Miss., the morning of March 26, causing massive damage, but “if needed, we will be the first to be called in,” said Tommy Puckett, Alabama state disaster relief director. At that point, “their people were taking care of the whole situation.”

Alabama Baptist volunteers responded to a few requests for cleanup of downed trees in the Birmingham area after straight-line winds came through the same morning.

At press time March 27, volunteers were bracing “for incoming storms tonight and in the early morning hours,” Puckett said. (TAB)
