Edwards, Aubrey DeVere

AubreyDeVereEdwards, a retired Alabama Baptist minister of music, died Nov. 16. He was 73.

Born in Pennsylvania but raised in Alabama and Georgia, Edwards graduated from SamfordUniversity in Birmingham and earned his master’s degree from SouthwesternBaptistTheologicalSeminary in FortWorth, Texas.

He was music ministerat ShadesMountainBaptistChurch, VestaviaHills, for 24 years. Edwards also served as interim music minister at First Baptist Church, Guntersville; Lakeside Baptist Church, Birmingham; First Baptist Church, Alabaster; Calvary Baptist Church, Tuscaloosa; and a church in Georgia. He was minister of music and youth in churches in Tennessee and North Carolina and organist at FirstBaptistChurch, Trussville. He also served churches in Texas and Virginia in his more than 50 years of ministry.

While at Shades Mountain Baptist, Edwards started the NewWind youth choir and led international choir missions trips to locations like Africa, the Bahamas, Siberia and Brazil. He also came up with the idea for Starlight, an outdoor revival held at Berry High School.

Pastor Emeritus Charles T.Carter said, “[Edwards] was the best personal witness and soulwinner that I ever had as a staff member. … He had all the talent in the world you could ask for and was one of the finest leaders of worship that I’ve ever known.

“He had a great heart and a great spirit,” Carter said.

Edwards was a member of Shades Mountain at the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Phyllis; three daughters; and five grandchildren. (TAB)
