MAPUTO, Mozambique — Eight Christians were murdered in northern Mozambique in early September, part of a series of attacks in the southeastern African nation.
Nampula Province was the site of three of the attacks. Militants affiliated with Ahlu Sunnah Wa-Jama (locally called Al Shabaab) fatally shot a Christian woman Sept. 6, reported the relief group Barnabas Fund.
The next day, the group, which is affiliated with the Islamic State, killed another Christian and burned a church. Then on Sept. 8, four Christians were killed, and two churches and 120 houses were burned.
The group further claimed responsibility for murdering two Christians in Cabo Delgado Province, north of Nampula Province.
Pattern of violence
Al Shabaab has been perpetrating terror upon Cabo Delgado for five years, Barnabas Fund reported. The violence and atrocities against Christians and moderate Muslims in Cabo Delgado have resulted in that area being called “the land of fear.”
In June, Al Shabaab attacked a Nampula village and beheaded a Christian.
Mozambique is No. 41 on Open Doors’ 2022 World Watch List of places most difficult to be a Christian.
