CHULA VISTA, Calif. — Jesus said He was the light of the world. Now some Episcopal churches are poised to be the light of San Diego County.
Two congregations have signed on to the efforts of Episcopal Power and Light, which is urging churches to get their power from clean, renewable sources. This summer the Episcopal Church’s General Convention passed a resolution encouraging churches and church members to use renewable sources of electricity in response to global warming.
“Episcopal Power and Light believes that because the government hasn’t found a solution to cutting CO2 emissions, the faith community is called upon to take a leadership role — by its exemplary behavior, and by putting faith into action,” said. Sally Bingham, co-founder of the initiative. “While others wait and debate, the faith community has begun taking steps to help heal the environment.”
Churches in the program will get their electricity from Green Mountain Energy Company, which will make donations to participating churches.
