MONROVIA, Liberia — An Episcopalian businessman will lead Liberia now that former President Charles Taylor has been exiled to Nigeria after 14 years of violence. Charles Gyude Bryant, 54, was selected on Aug. 21 to be leader of the transitional government until October 2005 when Liberia will hold elections. Bryant told reporters, “I will play the role of a neutral and healing character to cool down the political tension which has characterized Liberia for more than a decade. I will cut off the hate and anger which have eaten deep into the people’s way of life.” According to Anglican Communion News Service, Bryant has the support of both the rebel factions and government. He is chairman of the board of trustees of Liberia’s Episcopal church.
