Leah McRae said something happened recently in the community of Eva that highlighted what can happen “when brothers and sisters work together.”
On Aug. 11, 11 churches in the area came together to pull off a big back-to-school bash for the community.
“To me, it was a great show of how we can come together and really do some incredible things,” said McRae, a member of West Side Baptist Church in Eva.
‘Together we thrive’
The churches — six of which were Baptist — joined forces with local businesses and First Priority to host the community for a day of fun at Shorty Ryan Park. They had snow cones, popcorn, bouncy houses, cornhole, human Connect Four, a dunking booth and a variety of other games.
“The sign we put up said, ‘Together We Thrive’ — that’s what we’ve been calling ourselves,” McRae said. “My hope is that as they see us work together, they see Jesus in us.”
She said in April, Cynthia Frost Weaver — a member of Eva Baptist Church — organized volunteers from several churches to put on a community Easter egg hunt. The success of that event made them realize they could do more if they all worked together, and now that they’ve had the back-to-school bash, they’re looking toward more possibilities in the future.
“Together we can do things we couldn’t do alone,” McRae said. “My church is a very small church; if we pull together, there are things that we can accomplish.”
