Evangelism conference set in Dothan

Five sessions of preaching and singing will be featured during the annual Alabama Baptist State Evangelism Conference, Jan. 24-25, at the Dothan Civic Center.

The conference theme will be “Celebrating New Believers,” said Sammy Gilbreath, director of evangelism for the State Board of Missions (SBOM).

“Discipling new believers is not optional,” Gilbreath said. “Evangelism without discipleship is exploitation of people.

“We want to encourage each other to spend a great deal of time and effort discipling those we’ve led to Christ and those who will come to Christ during the new decade.”

Among the preachers who will speak during the conference are:

  • John Avant, pastor, New Hope Baptist Church, Fayetteville, Ga.
  • Glenn Graham Jr., senior pastor, East Memorial Baptist Church, Prattville.
  • Frederick Haynes, pastor, Friendship West Baptist Church, Dallas, Texas.
  • Junior Hill, evangelist, Hartselle.
  • Ron Lewis, church growth consultant, Carrollton, Texas.
  • Waylon Moore, founder, Missions Unlimited, Tampa, Fla.
  • John Morgan, pastor, Sagemont Baptist Church, Houston, Texas.
  • Jerry Pipes, director of ministry evangelism, North American Mission Board.
  • Harper Shannon, retired director of evangelism, SBOM.
  • Ted Traylor, pastor, Olive Baptist Church, Pensacola, Fla.
  • Don Wilton, pastor, First Baptist Church, Spartanburg, S.C.

Special music will be provided by a variety of guests, including the Alabama Singing Men; “Faith,” an ensemble from Judson College; the Evans family, an ensemble from Dothan; the choir from Ridgecrest Baptist Church, Dothan; and a combined choir from several Dothan-area churches.

The conference will begin at 1:30 p.m. Monday and conclude around 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Each session will be preceded by music by members of the Alabama Baptist Conference of Full-Time Evangelists, which will also sponsor an afterglow music sharing time from 9:15 to 11 p.m. Monday.

Parking will be available first at the Dothan Civic Center, with overflow parking provided at the following locations: parking lots within walking distance of the civic center; First Baptist Church, Dothan; Comfort Inn; Courtyard by Marriott and Fairfield Inn.

“If the crowd is as anticipated – and this could be one of our largest attended conferences ever – parking will be at a premium,” Gilbreath noted.

But arrangements have been made to facilitate quick transportation to the civic center.

“We will have shuttle buses running constantly between the civic center and these sites,” Gilbreath explained. “No one should have to wait more than five minutes for a shuttle to pick them up.”
