Gracing the podium for the first time during the 2009 convention annual meeting, Evangelist Junior Hill helped deliver The Alabama Baptist report Nov. 18, telling messengers he cannot recall a single week in more than 40 years that he has missed reading the nearly 175-year-old state Baptist paper.
Following a video detailing the paper’s ministry and service to the Alabama Baptist State Convention and its cooperating churches, Hill told messengers not only is The Alabama Baptist the state Baptist paper with the largest circulation but “I believe it’s the finest.”
“I consider it my source of information locally, on the state level and on the international level.”
Hill commended The Alabama Baptist’s President and Publisher Bob Terry for his helpful editorials, stand on moral issues and unapologetic opposition to moral discrepancies.
“He is unapologetically Southern Baptist and is committed to the Cooperative Program (CP) and the ministries it fosters,” Hill said. “In a day when some have thought it advantageous, wise and ‘cool’ to distance oneself from the Southern Baptist Convention and disdain the name Baptist, I’m grateful Bob Terry is calling to remembrance who we are as Baptists and the heritage passed down to us by our forefathers.”
Noting the paper’s minimal cost and superior benefits, Hill explained that in his first pastorate many years ago, he led the church to add The Alabama Baptist into the church budget and encouraged other pastors to do the same.
“If you don’t have The Alabama Baptist in your church budget, it would be wise to do that,” Hill said. “I never cease to be amazed at the influence of The Alabama Baptist.”
Terry also took a moment to share his appreciation for the CP, which allows the paper to be affordable for all churches, and the support of churches across the state, making only one request: “Earnestly pray for us as we do our very best under God’s guidance to provide news and information as well as inspiration that will build up the body of Christ known as Alabama Baptists.”
“Thank God we have a means of keeping up with one another, and I thank you Dr. Terry for The Alabama Baptist,” Hill said. “If this brief testimony leaves you with the impression that Junior Hill desperately loves and appreciates The Alabama Baptist, then I’ve brought a pretty good report.”
