EL GENEINA, Sudan — A man who put faith in Jesus Christ has been disowned by his family, and his wife was made to divorce him.
The man from El Geneina in Sudan’s West Darfur state left Islam to become a Christian in January 2024, a source told Morning Star News. Upon learning about the man’s conversion, a sheikh told him in August to return to Islam or face repercussions.

When the man did not comply, the sheikh later prompted the man’s relatives to attack him, the source said.
Seeking refuge
The man left home Oct. 9 and, with other converts from Islam, sought refuge in another location.
Only 4.5% of Sudan’s population is Christian, states Morning Star. Not only do Christians face persecution from individual Muslims, but they also suffer attacks from the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces. The RSF and the SAF are Islamist paramilitary groups that are battling each other.
Sudan is No. 5 on Open Doors’ 2025 World Watch List of places most difficult to be a Christian.
