First Baptist Church, Alpine, of the Coosa River Association raised $1,000 June 1 at its Countryfest to donate toward the construction of a new worship center at Shocco Springs Conference Center in Talladega.
Members of the church donated items for the yard sale, prepared barbecue sandwiches and hot dogs to sell and supplied cakes, pies, jellies, and jams for a cake sale.
“It was quite a large amount [of money] to be raised in four hours for Shocco Springs,” said Kathy Ryan, administrative assistant to Shocco Springs executive director Buster Taylor.
Pastor Larry Morris of Alpine said the Countryfest was more than a fundraiser. “It causes interaction. It’s a fellowship promoter,” he said. “We find people enjoy giving their wares. We get some really nice stuff, like furniture and china pieces. There are a lot of people in our area who need this kind of stuff.”
Alpine member Lou Rainey Boggs and William Parks co-chaired Countryfest. Boggs organized the yard sale event and Parks prepared the barbecue and hot dog meal.
Ryan said Shocco springs and Alpine have an ongoing relationship. “Alpine church is a local church here. It’s about 10 miles away, and several employees [of Shocco Springs] go to Alpine Baptist Church.”
“We appreciate Shocco Springs, because I see it as an open door ministry to more than just Baptist,” Morris said. “I think that’s what ministry is all about, crossing denominational lines.”
Ryan said construction on the worship center had not begun because there are other projects that must be completed first. However, the money that was raised by Alpine will be saved until construction on the worship center can begin.
