When railroad flagman Frank Hill resigned to become an Alabama Baptist preacher decades ago, he had no idea the number of churches and people that decision would impact. Hill was honored Dec. 3 on his 90th birthday by First Baptist Church, Clanton, in Chilton Baptist Association for 70 years of serving numerous state Baptist churches. Hill, a Billingsley native, answered the call to full-time ministry in 1946.
He preached at local churches and took classes through Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and then was called to his first full-time church — White Pond Baptist Church, Prattville — in 1947. He later furthered his education at Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He and wife Lorene joined First, Clanton, after his retirement in 1985 and taught Sunday School when needed. Lorene Hill, his wife of nearly 69 years, died in 2004. The former railroad man said he hopes he is remembered as a minister "that always tried to keep it on the rails for the Lord."
