Seven children and one adult from First Baptist Church, Cullman, were injured while traveling back from a field trip to the McWane Center, an interactive science center located in downtown Birmingham, July 12.
The accident occurred on Interstate 65 in Blount County, as one of the two church vans blew a tire out. Children’s minister Becky Alexander and the remainder of the group traveling in the other van witnessed the accident.
“One of our children in the back of our van said ‘look at our van.’ A tire had already blown when I turned around to see the accident,” said Alexander.
The children then joined together in prayer while their driver proceeded to help those injured in the accident.
Alexander remained at the hospital until all of her children walked out.
She said one child underwent plastic surgery on his arm and is doing fine. The others injured in the accident sustained minor injuries.
Six children were transported in ambulances while one child and adult were checked out once they reached Cullman Regional Medical Center.
She said the driver of an 18-wheeler that drove behind the van with the blowout managed to avoid crashing into the van.
Alexander expressed how miraculous it was that two 18-wheel trucks were able to stop.
“It’s a miracle (no one else was seriously hurt),” Alexander said. “God was watching over us and we are thankful.”
