First Baptist Church, Falkville, celebrated 125 years with a Saturday cookout, fellowship, special music and Sunday morning service Sept. 22–23.
Wayne Coots, who served on the five-member anniversary committee, said there was a “good turnout” at the Saturday fellowship time. On Sunday the church welcomed Jerry Reeder, a former member, who shared the morning’s sermon based on the universality of the gospel message. Nancy Beasley, an Alabama Baptist Historical Commission representative, presented the church with a commemorative plaque. Dorothy Clark, a member for 83 years, was recognized as having the longest membership. Geraldine Rowe, a member since childhood, spoke about her experience growing up in the church.
Coots said, “It was a special time for us. A lot of churches don’t make it [to 125 years]. We’re very proud.”
Greg Burcham, who has served First, Falkville, as bivocational pastor for almost four years, said the weekend’s atmosphere was “very friendly and very exciting.”
At least 200 people filled the sanctuary, Burcham said, including the balcony and the choir loft.
Burcham said he hopes the Morgan Baptist Association church continues to grow and to meet the needs of the community. He was pleased to share that by mid-October three baptisms had already taken place and one family joined the church as new members.
