Wherever there are adults who want to reach children, I’m willing to go,” said Susan Whitley, a member of First Baptist Church, Fyffe, who recently taught a Vacation Bible School (VBS) clinic for adults in the Philippines.
“By teaching them how to conduct a Vacation Bible School, they can be active in teaching their own communities,” she said.
Whitley was in the Philippines at the invitation of the Agusan River Valley Association of Southern Baptist Churches and in partnership with Alabama Baptist missionaries Jess and Wendy Jennings.
She conducted training in three locations, covering the subjects of the basics of conducting VBS, teaching simple games and showing teachers how to choose stories that will be effective in evangelizing children.
These stories included subjects such as Christ’s power to heal and perform miracles; Christ’s death, burial and resurrection; examples of evangelism in the gospel and the truths of Jesus as God’s son. By the end of the workshop, 29 believers had been trained representing 11 churches. To apply their training, workers conducted a one-day VBS following the workshop in a local village. More than 120 children attended in the three locations.
