It was 1984 when the first notes sprang forth from The Living Christmas Tree properly placed in the choir loft of First Baptist Church, Huntsville, in Madison Baptist Association. And 25 years later, it is safe to say this musical program certainly has made its mark on tradition.
Assembly of this steel-frame fir of 14 tiers calls for five days; dozens of workers; 7,500 pieces of greenery; 13,000 lights; and appropriate measuring of the approximately 170 singers’ heights.
“It’s the most effective way we’ve found to reach the community with the Christmas message,” said Billy Orton, minister of music and worship who has led the program for the past 11 years.
With a nearly 60-piece orchestra, The Living Christmas Tree comes to life. This year’s tree will feature a surprise guest soloist and interpretive dancers. Orton said he hopes The Living Christmas Tree, voted by Huntsville residents as a favorite holiday event, gives the 7,000 to 8,000 attendees a chance to “reflect on the significance of the Incarnation and leave with a sense of joy.”
Presentations are scheduled for Dec. 17 and 18 at 7:30 p.m., Dec. 19 at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 20 at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
