After the April 2011 tornadoes, volunteers from First Baptist Church, Montgomery, in Montgomery Baptist Association assisted in areas of impact and continue to do so more than a year later.
Volunteers ministered in Tuscaloosa, Fort Payne, Eclectic and Birmingham, said Brian Gay, minister of missions for First, Montgomery.
Every weekend for five weeks after the storms, teams went out to help.
They provided relief services while ministering to and sharing the gospel with people, Gay said.
After that initial effort, the church served as a liaison, connecting individuals to places where work was needed.
In the first few weeks after the storms, the church sent out more than 100 volunteers. That figure represents only those who went through the church for assignments. Some individuals may have responded on their own.
The church also served as a hub for collections and distributions to other regions.
The act of meeting needs and ministering to people is continuing. “We’re still involved to this day,” Gay noted.
People of the church are assisting in rebuilding Mount Hebron East Baptist Church, Eclectic, in Elmore Baptist Association and expect to be involved until completion. “And possibly beyond that,”
Gay added.
