FRIENDSHIP ASSOCIATION
First Baptist Church, Oneonta, recently honored Doug and Rachel Williams for more than 50 years of faith and dedicated service. The couple has served in ministry since 1965, with Doug Williams spending the first 34 years of that time serving in church staff roles.
He served as minister of education at Fairfield Highlands Baptist Church, Midfield, from 1965-1970, and as minister of education/evangelism at First Baptist Church, Center Point, from 1970-1978. At First, Center Point, he developed a massive bus ministry with 15 buses and served as bus ministry consultant for the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions’ Sunday School department.
After he left First, Center Point, he served in similar church staff roles in Georgia and Florida until 1997. Also during that time, he served on staff at the Florida Baptist Convention from 1992 until 1998. In 1999, he joined First, Oneonta, and has led FAITH evangelism teams and taught Sunday School ever since. He served as a national FAITH consultant from 1997 to 2008, teaching more than 130 FAITH clinics in the U.S. and abroad. Over the years, he also trained people in Evangelism Explosion.
Members from several of the Williamses’ former congregations attended Doug and Rachel Williams Day on May 23, and First, Oneonta, reported that the couple “enjoyed seeing old friends and thoroughly enjoyed the day.” Larry Gipson is pastor.
The Williams, who grew up on the same street in the Birmingham neighborhood of Powderly, will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary on Nov. 1.
