As I sat in a long line of traffic a few days before Christmas, I noticed the chaos around me. People were darting in and out of lanes to gain that coveted spot of one-car length ahead of where they previously sat.

Brake lights here, horns honking there, frustrated looks on drivers’ faces — everyone seemed exasperated as they painfully inched forward toward their destinations.

Surreal moment
How could I be so calm and quiet amid all the commotion around me, I wondered. My schedule and pending deadlines could certainly rival any one of theirs.
And yet my breathing remained slow and steady, my mind flowed smoothly to what was next on the agenda, clicking through the mental list of “urgent” versus “important” versus “would be nice” versus “if time allows.”
I’ve certainly had my fair share of hectic and uptight moments through the years, but as the years continue to roll along, I’m noticing a newfound ability to take situations in stride, pivot as needed and manage expectations.
Maybe it’s the investment of those ahead of me on the journey who continue to help me grow and learn. Maybe it’s the seasoned experience that comes with time — 30 years of time to be exact (and I’m not describing my age).
New Year’s Day marked my 30th anniversary as a full-time staff member of The Alabama Baptist, Inc., and I’m as, if not more, excited about the work we do than during those first days in 1996.
Meeting needs
Our team has helped the ministry grow from one weekly newspaper to a comprehensive media group creating content across multiple platforms, all while maintaining quality print products.
Calmness, intentionality and awareness may indeed be the key to where we head next, much like my recent traffic experience.
While many of the drivers around me that day remained absorbed in themselves, I noticed a distressed gentleman merely trying to turn left as a long line of vehicles piled up behind him.
Car after car refused to pull back enough to let him scoot through, so I decided to be the one — and with that simple act, about 15 drivers felt a little lighter and back on track.
