Food allergies keep child from taking communion

Citing 2,000 years of communion and faith, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston has refused to accommodate a child with food allergies by substituting a rice communion wafer for the traditional wheat wafer.

The parents of Jenny Richardson, 5, had asked for the change because their daughter suffers from celiac disease, which makes her ill if she eats gluten, a protein found in wheat and other grains. The family has begun worshipping at a Methodist Church, which has more flexible rules on communion. (EP)
