Forest Baptist Church, Gordo, in Pickens Baptist Association celebrated its 175th anniversary Oct. 17 with more than three times its normal attendance of 20.
The celebration concluded with a community lunch and a slideshow as the church reflected on its history. Special music was provided by Doug Sellers and pianist Elinor Ruth Blankney.
To wrap up the service, Director of Missions Gary Farley of Pickens Association spoke from Joshua 4 on “What Mean These Stones?”
During the service, a representative of the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission was on hand to present a plaque, honoring the years of ministry. Gene Abston, Forest Baptist’s oldest member, accepted the plaque. Church clerk Doug Sanders Jr. has a long-standing connection to the church, too — he grew up there.
“My hope is that Forest Baptist will continue to worship God, serve this community and help those in need,” Sanders said of the future. “We have always been a community-centered church with our doors open wide.”
Vernon Blackburn has been pastor since 1982.
