Sheikh Hassan Podo, a 28-year-old imam in eastern Uganda who converted to Christianity, was interrogated and then beaten by family members after missing mosque prayers for three consecutive weeks and attending church.
He had kept his faith in Christ a secret, but a Muslim neighbor saw Podo enter a church building and went straight to Podo’s parents and brothers to report him.
When Podo arrived at the house that evening his family interrogated him about where he had spent the better part of the day.
They then began to beat him with sticks, calling him an infidel and an enemy of the Muslim religion, Podo said. His wife and two children managed to escape to the home of a nearby Christian neighbor, he said. (MS)
