Charles Robert Beard, former Alabama Baptist pastor and emeritus Southern Baptist missionary to Taiwan, died Oct. 15. He was 77.
A native of Memphis, Tenn., Beard and his wife, the former Saranell Head of Fairfield, were appointed by the Foreign Mission Board (now International Mission Board) in 1967.
He served as pastor of the English language Trinity Baptist Church in Tainan until 1976, when he became principal of Morrison Academy in Koahsiung. From 1986 to retirement in 1993, he was engaged in student evangelism in Pingtung.
Beard was a graduate of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.
Prior to missionary appointment, he served as a teacher and coach at Lipscomb (Ala.) Junior High School. He also was pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Bessemer and rural congregations in Clarke County. He is survived by his wife, three daughters and seven grandchildren.
