Former Muscle Shoals DOM dies

Former director of missions (DOM) for Muscle Shoals Association B. Elmer Fowler died April 8. He was 74. An active member of Moulton Baptist Church, Fowler served as DOM for more than 20 years.

During his service, he was responsible for acquiring and renovating the building that houses the current associational offices. Fowler helped in the upgrading and maintaining of the grounds for Taylor Camp (a camp run by the association) and setting up summer programs for both children and youth there. His leadership and enthusiasm when working the World Missions Conference was well known, and the 100 percent participation of the churches in his area as the fruit of that enthusiasm.

After completing New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, Fowler served as pastor of Providence Baptist Church and Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, both in Muscle Shoals Association, and other Alabama Baptist churches.

Known for his serving spirit and for being popular in the pulpit, Fowler preached in a different church every Sunday while he was DOM. This gave him the chance to be a “pastor to the pastors,” serving and supporting them.

Fowler is survived by his wife, JoAnn, two daughters and three grandsons.
