Former Alabama Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU) president and national WMU leader, Madeline Dix Reeves died May 2 at 96.
Born in Montgomery in 1904, the Dix family moved to Decatur in 1906. She graduated from Decatur High School and Judson College in Marion.
She married Walter Reeves Sr. in 1934. They served at churches in Sheffield, Tuskegee and Lanett.
She served as the young people’s leader in the WMU for Alabama’s northern district and participated in numerous women’s clubs.
She founded Valley Music Club and served as its first president.
Reeves served on Judson’s board of trustees for 23 years. She held the office of president of Alabama WMU from 1947-1952 and served as vice president of national WMU those same years. She also served on the Southern Baptist Convention’s executive committee for seven years.
Reeves played a major role in raising funds and establishing a national WMU headquarters in downtown Birmingham in 1951. She was also on the original committee that recommended the move of Howard College in East Wood to its present location in Homewood and the change of its name to Samford University.
In 1993, she was one of two pastors’ wives featured at the annual meeting of the Alabama Baptist Historical Society.
Reeves was a member of First Baptist Church, Decatur, for almost 50 years.
