Former Troy Children’s Home residents sought for picnic

In a recent computer crash the names and addresses of former residents of Troy’s Alabama Baptist Children’s Home (ABCH) were lost.

The loss comes at a difficult time for members of the ABCH picnic committee who are in the heat of planning for and inviting residents to the 12th Annual Alabama Baptist Children’s Home Picnic. The picnic is scheduled for April 17 at 5 p.m. at Montgomery’s Lagoon Park, Pete Peterson Lodge.

“We have many of the names and addresses but not nearly all of them,” Ricky Thompson, who serves on the picnic committee, said in Troy’s The Messenger. “We have sent invitations to those we have addresses for, but we want everybody to know they are invited.”

James Davis, who also helps plan the picnics, said a partial list of former residents’ names and addresses had been found at press time. Still, a large number remain missing.

Thompson and Davis, who were ABCH “brothers” from 1961 to 1969, were the originators of the annual picnic.

Brother- and sister-like friendships are formed at the Children’s Home, Thompson said.

“There was a closeness, a bond that we all shared, and many of us remain close to this day,” Thomson said in The Messenger. “That’s why we have this annual picnic.”

Those interested in participating in the ABCH picnic are urged to pre-register. Call 334-566-0156, 334-546-0778 or 334-281-4140 for more information.
