Friends of Hale County (FOHC) is a nonprofit organization established in 2002 for the purpose of helping Alabama’s “Black Belt counties” — specifically Hale, Greene, Sumter, Pickens and Washington counties — overcome hopelessness and struggles to fulfill their highest potential.
Named for their rich, dark topsoil, the Black Belt counties are typified by poverty, limited access to medical care and education, substandard housing and high unemployment.
In light of the counties’ limitations, FOHC looks to provide increased medical care, improve school systems and resources, create beneficial recreational activities and make provisions for improved housing. Its mission is to spread Christ’s love through the Christian ideal of loving one’s neighbor.
Many Alabama Baptists and Baptist churches help with this interdenominational organization that focuses on raising funds and supplies for the betterment of these communities.
