GamePlan, The Alabama Baptist’s annual special issue devoted to sports evangelism is in its fourth year of publication, and its effectiveness is receiving “high scores” of praise from churches.
Pastor James Sampley, First Baptist, Ashville, said the decision to utilize 100 copies of GamePlan in the church’s sports ministry last year was “an answered prayer.”
First, Ashville, hosts a Friday morning breakfast that includes local athletes. Sampley said he was searching for literature that would be appropriate to hand out at the breakfast.
“GamePlan was a perfect solution for what we needed,” he said. “We wanted to point out to our youth that there are outstanding people with tremendous ability in sports and at the same time can love the Lord.”
Sampley, who is also the chaplain for the football team, said “GamePlan was effective, and I’m doubling my order for this year.”
Pastor LarryInman of Fairview Baptist Church, Athens, said men in the church distributed GamePlan at three East Limestone High School football games last year.
“We put a label on the back with our church name,” he said. “It was a nonthreatening way for us to reach people- not only youth, but adults as well. Youth aren’t the only ones looking for positive role models,” he said.
Brent Rawson, student minister at First Baptist, Satsuma, involved the church’s youth group with distributing GamePlan at one of their high school football games.
“We inserted information on our church into the issue and the students stood at the gate entrance and handed them out.”
The four-page GamePlan issue is complete with testimonies, photographs and an easy-to-follow plan of salvation. The cost is 25 cents each and the minimum order is 20. The deadline to order is Aug. 21. To order call 205-870-4720 or e-mail rburks@alabapnews.org.
