At 86, James U. “Jimmy” Gandy still declares, “I am willing to do anything to help further the kingdom of God.” Gandy has spent his life as an evangelist, traveling all over the United States. He is known for his sermons on the American flag — preached 618 times — and the Titanic — preached nearly 55 times.
Q: When and how did you become a Christian?
A: I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Savior when I was 13 years of age. I really became a Christian because of my sister. She was won to Christ by the Christian and Missionary Alliance.
When she trusted Christ, she started to work on her two brothers. She led both of us to Jesus Christ.
Q: When were you led into the ministry?
A: I started preparing sermons as soon as I trusted Christ as Savior at 13. You hear men say they ran from the Lord. They have to almost be spanked from the Lord.
I was the other way. I was running toward the ministry.
Q: What do you get from the ministry?
A: Ministry is an opportunity to create confidence in the hearts of people that will listen to you. It is an opportunity to reach and influence people for Jesus Christ. It is an opportunity for people to respect you.
I am just a sinner saved by grace. It is wonderful to be accepted by fellow Christians.
Q: What difference will the ministry make for you in the future?
A: It will keep me on the straight and narrow path.
