Jimmy Garner has served as pastor of Skyland Boulevard Baptist Church, Tuscaloosa, for nearly 22 years.
Q: How did you become a Christian?
A: I was a member at Woodville Baptist Church, near Huntsville, but I wasn’t saved. Because of the faithfulness of the ministry of that church and the Lord touching my heart, I accepted Christ at the age of 38.
Q: What led you to become a pastor?
A: After I was saved in 1975, two years later, I felt in my heart God was calling me and I couldn’t get away from that and I surrendered. I began preaching in 1979.
Q: Why have you continued serve as a pastor?
A: I have stayed because when I surrendered to the ministry, I knew that was what God wanted me to do for the rest of my life. I wouldn’t be happy doing anything else.
Q: What have you gotten from serving in the ministry?
A: It has meant fulfillment in my life and contentment. It’s a joy to know I’m doing what He has called me to do.
Q: How do family members support you?
A: My wife, daughter, son-in-law and grandson all are believers and support me in prayer.
Q: How do you see yourself involved in the ministry in the future?
A: I don’t have any plans now of retirement. I want to pastor as long as I can effectively serve the church and serve my people.
