Geneva Association starts thrift store, food pantry

“In the worst of times, we are giving our best through Christ,” said Marie Bolin, secretary of Geneva Baptist Association.

And that means starting a new ministry.

Christ Helping Hands Ministry is a thrift store and food pantry intended to help those in need by providing clothing and other items at a low price. It is expected to open by the beginning of June in a building behind the associational office in Hartford.

The ministry will be run by volunteers and operate on donations, and proceeds will be used to help pay bills and rent for the needy.

“The job base in Geneva County has been drastically reduced — heavy in cotton mills and trucking — and when that base got torn out, we haven’t really been able to replace it,” said Dicky McAllister, director of missions for Geneva Association. “We are going to be ready to help people in a little more detail than we have in the past.

“It certainly is birthed of God,” McAllister said of the new ministry. “In working together, we can help meet a lot of [the needs]. It’s for His glory to reach people spiritually as well as mentally, physically and financially.”
