George Rable to Deliver Hinson Lecture

George C. Rable, professor of history and Charles G. Summersell Chair in Southern History at the University of Alabama, will deliver a lecture titled "God as General: Was There a Religious History of the American Civil War?" as part of the Third Annual University of Mobile (UM) Billy G. Hinson Lecture Series. The lecture will be held March 27 at 7 p.m. in Moorer Auditorium on the UM campus.

"The lecture will examine how Americans used their religious beliefs to explain and interpret the course of the war, including the vast amount of death and destruction," said Rable, who will use the first Battle of Bull Run and Lincoln’s second inaugural address as illustrations of that process.

The Alabama Humanities Foundation, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, is a co-sponsor of the lecture.
