LIMESTONE ASSOCIATION
George Whitten says if his life ended today, he’d die a blessed man and a blessed pastor. His 46 years in ministry have been wonderful from start to finish.
“It’s been a great ride,” said Whitten, who is retiring March 31 from the pastorate of Fairview Baptist Church, Athens. “I’ve enjoyed every bit of it.”
He started preaching at 18 and later accepted the call to serve as pastor of Antioch Baptist Church, Phil Campbell. From there, he went on to serve at South Hamilton Baptist Church, Hamilton, and First Baptist Church, Double Springs. Then after a three-and-a-half-year stint as director of missions for Muscle Shoals Association, he went back into the pulpit at Fairview Baptist.
“It’s hard to believe it’s been 46 years,” Whitten said.
His wife, Virginia, has been there for nearly all of it — they married 45 years ago.
“We had great times and saw a lot of people come to know Christ,” he said.
His favorite parts of ministry were organizing missions trips and seeing people “get it,” Whitten said. “All four churches were super good to me, and I tried to be to them too. It was just a good run.”
