German lawyers want Bible outlawed

BERLIN — Lawyers of a religious sect in Germany want to outlaw the Bible.

Christian Sailer and Gert-Joachim Hetzel, two lawyers belonging to the “Universal Life” sect, have asked the ministry of family affairs to classify the Bible as inappropriate literature for children. The application was rejected by Minister Christine Bergmann.

According to the IDEA news agency, Sailer and Hetzel claim that the Bible contains messages of racism and brutality that could harm the souls of naive children and should therefore be listed as unsuitable reading material.
Sailer and Hetzel’s criticisms are consistent with the teachings of the Universal Life sect, a religious group that follows the teachers of self-proclaimed prophet Gabriele Wittek. Wittek, who claims to receive messages directly from Jesus Christ, has publicly criticized the Bible and German churches.
