I Know a Secret

It’s probably no secret that I like Ginny Owens’ music. She dials up enough R&B to take the edge off the pop textures that are a big part of her sound and her writing captures the struggles we all face — struggles of faith, of hope and just getting through the rough spots of this amazing life our Lord has given us.
This is Owens’ eighth studio record. This time she’s chosen to create her own label and she picked Monroe Jones (Third Day, Holly Williams) to produce the new project. Owens and Jones collaborated on her first three albums and the pairing seems to work well for her new record.
As a side note, I didn’t know until recently that Owens lost her sight at a very young age. One of my favorite albums from Owens is “Get In — I’m Driving.” I wish I had understood that tongue-in-cheek reference when I reviewed the album.
There are 14 songs on the new project, all but one written or co-written by Owens. The title cut is one of the best, describing life’s ups and downs, and the secret (God) that gets us through. The stark and haunting “Made For More” is another good one and a surprising contrast to the record’s pop overtones. The playful “What You Believe” takes Owens back to her R&B roots.
