Goode, Robert

Robert J. Goode, a Baptist pastor at churches in Alabama and North Carolina for more than 40 years, died Aug. 25. He was 68.

Goode began his ministerial career in 1956. He was ordained at Clayton Baptist Church, Montgomery, in 1957.

Following his ordination, Goode served at Brewer Memorial Baptist Church, Cecil; Grants Creek Baptist Church, Fosters; Pineview Baptist Church, Thomasville; Seventh Street Baptist Church, Bessemer; Forest Hills Baptist Church, Fairfield; Ridgecrest Baptist Church, Birmingham; First Baptist Church, Pell City; Florida Street Baptist Church, Greensboro, N.C.; Troutman Baptist Church, Troutman, N.C., and as interim of Wiggins Road Baptist Church, Mooresville, N.C. A graduate of Anniston High School, he also graduated from The University of Alabama, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and Luther Rice Seminary in Jacksonville, Fla.

In addition to his ministerial experience, Goode served in the Air Force 1950-1960 and as a chaplain in the Army Reserve 1974-1992, retiring as a lieutenant colonel.

Goode served on the executive committee of the Alabama Baptist State Convention, on the board of governors at Judson College and on the executive committee of the North Carolina Baptist Convention. In 1987, he served as president of North Carolina Pastors Conference.

Goode also started Faith Christian School in Bessemer and taught classes in Old Testament at Howard College (now Samford University) extension centers in Tuscaloosa and Pell City.

He is survived by his wife, Marie; two sons; two grandchildren; a niece and nephew.
