This summer, East Greenville Baptist Church, Greenville, in Butler Baptist Association gave some locals the chance to become olympic champions. The church held its second summer olympics event in June to reach out to the community and interest families in participating in Vacation Bible School.
“The Lord really blessed and we had a great time,” said Pastor Bob Garrard. “A lot of different people attended — our church members, visitors from other churches and many children and adults who don’t go to church.”
East Greenville Baptist offered 12 events during the olympics, six for children and six for adults. While the senior olympians competed in pingpong, the junior athletes picked up marbles with their toes in a kiddie wading pool. Other events included free throws, hula hoop, jump rope, beanbag toss and triathlon. The church awarded gold, silver and bronze medals to the top three winners in each event.
East Greenville church members organized the event, built game boards, set up and cooked hot dogs and hamburgers for lunch.
The event was such a success — with 42 in attendance — that the church plans to host another olympics event next summer, according to Garrard.
