America’s high school counselors ranked Judson College in Marion No. 20 in their list of best national liberal arts colleges in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges 2011 rankings, released Aug. 17.
In the spring, the magazine asked guidance counselors from America’s best high schools which national liberal arts colleges offer the best undergraduate education. The counselors rated the colleges on a scale of one to five, five being the best.
Judson was given a 4.2. It was one of seven women’s colleges and one of four Alabama colleges to make the list.
Birmingham-Southern College, which received a 4.1, was tied for 36th with 10 other schools, and Huntingdon College in Montgomery received a 3.9, tying it for 64th place with 18 other schools. Talladega College, which received a 3.0, tied with 12 others schools for 231st place.
Judson shared the No. 20 spot with Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa.; Colby College in Waterville, Maine; Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn.; New College of Florida in Sarasota; Occidental College in Los Angeles; Sewanee: The University of the South in Tennessee; and Trinity College in Hartford, Conn.
“[Judson] is both honored and humbled by the vote of confidence from the guidance counselors as reported through the survey with U.S. News & World Report,” President David E. Potts said.
“Ranking in the top 20 of all national liberal arts colleges is quite an accomplishment and is rooted in the effectiveness of a faculty and a genuine commitment to quality through Christian higher education,” he added.
Another Alabama Baptist school was a top pick of guidance counselors. Samford University in Birmingham was one of 24 schools ranked No. 74 among national universities.
It was given a 3.8. (JC, TAB)
