Diane Smalley went to Pagosa Springs, Colo., to help conduct Vacation Bible School (VBS). She came home with a vision for a new ministry at her church, one that has grown quickly in participants and in interest in the community.
Before going to Colorado, Smalley said she sensed God was about to give her a revelation. And during the week, He did.
A praise team from a Colorado church performed each morning during the opening ceremony of VBS. Smalley saw how the children enjoyed the time.
During the week, she began to feel that God wanted her to begin a team at her church, Happy Home Baptist in Henagar, where Jack Andrews serves as pastor.
About two weeks after returning from the missions trip, she and fellow church member Christie Wilson began the group, known as KFC. “We call it, ‘Kids for Christ,’” said Smalley.
It began with four participants and, within a few months, grew to include more than 20 children from ages 3 to 13.
The children sing and perform sign language to songs such as “Lord, I Life Your Name on High,” “Rejoice” and “Every Move I Make.”
Smalley said she, at first, was hesitant to start the group, not having music education and not feeling she could sing well. But she came to realize that God wanted her availability. Once she surrendered that, He would take care of her inabilities.
Within four weeks of the first practice, the group was ready to perform. Word quickly spread and requests came in for performances.
“People seem to be real excited about it,” said Wilson.
Magnolia, Wilson’s 7-year-old daughter, said she finds it exciting to go to other places to perform. Magnolia’s 3-year-old sister, Elizabeth Grace, is another member of KFC.
