Ann Harkins is someone you should know because in 1982 she won the Good Samaritan Award from the Birmingham Civitan Club for serving others. When she is able, she still visits nursing homes, welcomes her new neighbors and makes needlepoint pin cushions, among other things, for shut-ins.
Q: What led you to serve others?
A: There was a lot of sickness in our neighborhood and I just started taking care of those who were sick. It was just in my heart to help others.
Q: Why have you done this activity?
A: My mother used to tell us that idle hands are the devil’s workshop. If you keep your hands busy, you occupy your mind.
Q: What does the ministry demand?
A: Work, helping others.
Q: What do you get from the ministry?
A: I get a blessing from helping others. If you help others, it makes you happy.
Q: How do other family members support you?
A: My family has always supported me. They are a big help.
Q: How do you see yourself involved in this in the future?
A: I’m 79 years old and still try to do for others.
Q: What difference will serving others make for you in the future?
A: God has poured out His blessings to us over the many years so we look forward to the next year.
